I don’t know anyone personally who uses a search engine other than Google. If you do find someone who uses something other than Google, they either just don’t know any better or they want to use another search engine just to be different from everyone else. Read the rest of this entry »

I had this thought a couple weeks ago and it’s been stirring in my brain since then. For some reason, it seems like some people, usually companies, use blogs as a kind of guestbook. Let me explain. Read the rest of this entry »

So people are always using “Web 2.0″ as a buzzword to describe the latest greatest thing. What is Web 2.0? What was Web 1.0? Is Web 2.0 just bright colors, rounded corners and glossy buttons? Well, I’ll try to describe the differences based on my own observations and my understanding. Read the rest of this entry »

Yesterday evening I installed the Windows 7 Beta on my MacBook Pro using Boot Camp. After hearing all sorts of wonderful praise about this latest version of Windows, it peaked my couriosity and I needed to try it out. Now, I’m a Mac guy. I have been for over 3 years. I’ve gotten very comfortable with using OS X and it’s many features for navigationg through the OS. My last experience with Windows was Windows XP. This is my story of using the Windows 7 Beta. So, I’ve been writing these posts about learning HTML and CSS (not lately at least), and I decided to talk about how I came to learn HTML/CSS over the last 10 years and what tools and experiences I used to help me do it. I’m not saying that I am the ultimate source for HTML/CSS knowledge, but I’m MUCH more comfortable making websites than I was even a year ago. This is a tale of my experiences from the past 10 years. Brew some tea (or the beverage of your choice), sit back, get comfortable, and enjoy. Read the rest of this entry »

So today I decided to finish taking off the top of the ottoman. I continued removing staples. All together, I’m sure I removed over 100 staples. Finally I was able to separate the actual cushion from the frame. Once I did that I noticed several things.

Alright, so my parents have had this ottoman for a while, 20 years perhaps. It’s been in storage and hasn’t been used since it’s kinda nappy.

Well, I need another project to keep me occupied, so I decided to try to save it and use it for myself. This is my journey of trying to salvage it. So begins my adventure.

So today I decided to try out some green screen stuff. I’ve messed around with doing chroma keying before, but this is the first time that I’ve had a room big enough to really give it a good go. We’ve got a room that used to be a garage, and the people who had the house before us turned it into a giant room. Perfect! Read the rest of this entry »

So about a month ago I saw this article on Slashdot:

Now, most people would be like, “Ugh, why would you ever need 1 gigabit up and down? Only pirates need that kind of bandwidth. All I do is check my email and surf the web.”

I think that people don’t understand how web ads work. Web ads are very similar to billboards and people make the same mistakes about both.
People tend to think that a billboard is like a business card. They clutter up the billboard with contact info, address, email address, website, special offers, etc. This would be fine for a business card or a print ad. The problem is when you’re driving around, you only have time to look at a billboard for half a second. In that half a second you have to see who is advertising and what they’re advertising. You don’t have time to see where they’re located, what their phone number is, or anything.
The purpose of a billboard is for “brand recognition”. All these things I just mentioned also apply to web ads. Sure, you have more time to look at a web ad, but people never spend more than half a second looking at a web ad. When people go to a website, they’re looking for the content. They glance at the web ad to determine whether it is content or not. Once they realize it is not part of what they’re looking for, they move on. In that half a second you have to let people know who you are and what you’re advertising. If it is something that peaks the interest of a viewer, they will spend more than half a second looking at it and possibly seek more information about your product or service.
